Knowing you need to say something and knowing how to say it are two different things.

A difficult conversation tends to go sideways not because you lack confidence, but because you haven't found the words yet. ChatGPT is surprisingly good at helping you find them.

Try this prompt:

I need to have a difficult conversation with [person/role].

Here's what I'm trying to communicate: [dump your thoughts here — don't worry about wording it well]

Help me get to the root of what I'm actually trying to say. Then suggest 2–3 natural ways I could open the conversation — nothing scripted, just how a real person might say it.

Once you've got an opening that feels right, try this follow-up:

Now roleplay as [person/role] and respond the way they're likely to. I'll reply naturally. After a few exchanges, tell me where I got defensive or unclear — and what I should have said instead.

Pro Tip: Voice-to-text is ideal for this use case. Speak your thoughts out loud, let ChatGPT shape them into something clear, then rehearse the conversation the same way.

Happy prompting!
