Skills let you save how you do a task. Instead of explaining your process in every new chat, you write it down once and ChatGPT follows it every time.
Once that clicks, it's tempting to go big. You hand over the monthly report, the competitor review, maybe the whole strategy. That's the work that eats your week, so it feels like the obvious place to start.
Then the output comes back. It looks polished and sounds confident, but you can't easily tell if it's right. So you check every line, rewrite half of it, and quietly go back to doing it yourself.
Skills aren't the problem. The starting point is.
Your first skill should be a task you know so well that you can spot a mistake at a glance.
A campaign-brief check is a good fit. A brief goes in. You get back what's missing, what conflicts and what needs a decision. It's quick to review.
"Run our marketing strategy" is a poor fit. The questions change every time.
Look for four things:
You do it every week or more
The inputs look similar each time
You already trust your method
You can explain what "good" looks like
Let ChatGPT help you find tasks to turn into skills. Try this prompt:
You are a marketing operations lead. Help me pick one repeat task to turn into an AI skill.
My tasks:
[List each task with: how often I do it, what the input is, how I do it now, how long review takes, what happens if it's wrong]
1. Compare them
Rank each task on how stable the method is, how easy the inputs are to get, and how quickly I can check the output. Don't assume the biggest task is the best pick.
2. Recommend one
Pick a small starting task. Explain the trade-off and flag which parts should stay flexible or need my call.
3. Plan a test run
Give me a step-by-step manual trial using one real input before I save it as a skill.
Get it working on a few different inputs first. You'll quickly learn what deserves to be your next skill.
Happy prompting!
