When people aren't converting, the obvious response is to improve the message, strengthen the CTA, or remove friction.
But sometimes the CTA isn't the problem. The timing is.
You're asking someone to book a demo before they understand why they need the product. Asking for an email before you've given them enough value. Asking them to buy before you've answered the concern that's holding them back.
A conversion problem isn't always a persuasion problem. Sometimes you're simply asking too soon.
ChatGPT can help you audit your customer journey from the customer's side: not just what you want them to do next, but whether you've given them enough confidence, clarity, and motivation to actually do it.
Try this prompt:
You are a customer journey strategist. Audit the journey below to find where we're asking customers to take a step before they're ready.
CUSTOMER
[Who they are, the problem they're trying to solve, and anything relevant about how they buy]
CUSTOMER JOURNEY
[Paste the stages, touchpoints, messages, CTAs, and actions you're asking them to take]
EVIDENCE
[Paste any relevant customer research, feedback, objections, sales notes, analytics, conversion data, or drop-off data]
Create a friction map as a table with these columns:
- Stage/touchpoint
- What we're asking the customer to do
- What the customer likely knows or believes at this point
- What may make this ask feel premature
- What they may need first: proof, information, reassurance, value, or another step
- Evidence supporting this assessment
- Recommended change to the message, sequence, or CTA
- Research/data gap
Then identify the 3 biggest jumps in commitment across the journey and explain what should happen before each ask to make the next step feel more natural.
Base your conclusions on the information and evidence I provide. Don't invent customer motivations, objections, or behaviors. If there isn't enough evidence to make a confident assessment, flag it as a research gap instead.
The next step only works when it makes sense from the customer's side too.
Happy prompting!
