A vague brief produces a vague answer. It doesn’t matter how clever the prompt is.

Ask ChatGPT to create a campaign plan without explaining the audience, offer, business goal, budget, existing activity, or constraints, and it has two choices: give you something painfully broad, or fill the gaps with assumptions that sound plausible.

That is where a lot of AI work goes wrong.

The output can look polished. It may even include sensible ideas, a neat framework, and a confident recommendation. But if the underlying context is missing, it is still built on guesswork.

The fix is not always to write a longer prompt. It is to make ChatGPT part of the briefing process.

Before you ask it to create the work, ask it to identify what it needs to know. You will quickly see whether you have given it enough information to produce something useful, or whether you are asking it to make decisions you have not made yourself.

I need your help with the following marketing task:

[Describe the task]

Before completing it, review the information I have provided and assess whether you have enough context to produce a useful, specific result.

First, tell me:

1. What you understand about the task, goal, and expected output

2. What important information is missing, unclear, contradictory, or based on an assumption

3. The follow-up questions you need answered before you begin

Prioritize only the questions that would materially improve the result. Group them under:
- Business, audience, and offer
- Goal, decision, and success criteria
- Constraints, evidence, and existing work

Do not complete the task until I answer the questions.

Happy prompting!
