An edit can fix a sentence. It can also reveal a weakness in the way the work was produced.
Suppose a draft says: “Our solution empowers teams to work smarter.”
You change it to: “Account managers can see which client approvals are overdue before the weekly status call.”
The useful lesson is not “never use the word empower.” It is that this sentence needed to explain a concrete benefit for a specific reader, assuming the product actually supports it.
That distinction matters when you update your writing guidance. A long list of banned words can make the copy awkward without fixing the vague thinking underneath.
Use ChatGPT to extract a small, bounded rule from a real correction:
Help me learn from this editorial change.
Original: [paste]
Edited version: [paste]
Audience, objective and reason for the edit: [explain]
Identify the underlying problem the edit solved. Write one reusable principle, with a before/after example.
Explain when the principle applies and one situation where applying it rigidly would make the work worse.
Check it against this different sample: [paste]. Recommend whether to add it to our writing reference, keep it as an example, or treat it as specific to this assignment.
Approve the lesson before adding it to the reference library.
Then try it on another draft. If it improves the new work without flattening its voice or changing its purpose, you have captured something useful. If it only reproduces the original edit, the guidance needs more thought.
Happy prompting!
