We learned to use chatbots by giving them isolated tasks: summarize this document, list ten ideas, write this brief. That made sense when the main output was an answer in a chat.
AI is increasingly able to work through longer, multi-step jobs. When it can inspect files, conduct research and create finished materials, a narrow task can limit the result. You may prescribe one step when the real job requires five.
Compare these instructions:
Task: Summarize these campaign reports.
Outcome: Help me decide where to move next quarter’s budget. Analyze the reports, identify the strongest and weakest investments, flag missing evidence and produce a recommendation I can review with the leadership team.
The second instruction gives AI room to plan the work, while keeping the goal and final judgment with you.
Use this prompt to reframe a task:
I was about to give ChatGPT this task:
[task]
Help me turn it into an outcome-based brief.
Ask me what decision or finished result this work should support, who will use it, what source material is available, what constraints must be followed and what I need to approve.
After I answer, write a brief containing:
- the desired outcome;
- the definition of done;
- the available inputs;
- the required steps and checks;
- the boundaries and approval points;
- the final deliverables.
Do not begin the work until I approve the brief.
Give AI freedom over the route, not the destination or the standards.
Happy prompting!
