Reading a convincing recommendation feels a lot like understanding the problem. But making the recommendation yourself is a better test.

You have to decide which evidence matters, what you are assuming, and what you are willing to trade away. Those are useful reps for a marketer.

Try this fictional situation: a software company has increased trial signups, but the number of customers completing setup has stayed flat. The team can fund either another acquisition campaign or a small onboarding improvement. You have no further breakdown of the data yet.

Write your next move in three sentences. Include what you would check before committing the money.

A strong answer might focus on whether the new signups match the intended audience, where setup stalls, or whether the measurement changed. It does not need to announce that onboarding is definitely the problem.

Then use ChatGPT to challenge your reasoning:

Act as a marketing coach reviewing my decision-making.

Situation: [paste the scenario or a real problem]
My recommendation and reasoning: [paste]

Assess what I noticed, what I assumed, which trade-off I made and what evidence I should seek next.

Show the strongest reasonable case against my recommendation. Distinguish missing information from a reasoning error. Do not invent facts to resolve the uncertainty or give me a model answer before the critique.

Finish with one question that would make me reconsider my decision. Wait for my response.

The useful moment is noticing why your view changes. Save that explanation. Over time, it becomes a record of the patterns you are learning to recognize earlier.

Happy prompting!

The best influencer marketing advice never comes from a report

Think about the last thing that got you fired up about your job this year. Odds are it didn't come from a report. It came from someone who does the job, saying what happened when they tried it.

So we've filled a day with people like that.

Maya Shaff, ŌURA. Leah Walker, Adobe. Georgia Humphries, Stanley 1913. Enara Roy, Halfday. Tyler Vaught, Edelman. Josh Rangel, Ogilvy. Sarah Whittle, ex-Crocs and Duolingo.

And that's just the first wave of speakers.

Return on Influence Festival '26 is a free, virtual day dedicated to influencer marketing. Like any good festival, there are stages. But no mud, no queues, and absolutely no porta-potties.

Sign up today, and the rest of the lineup lands in your inbox first.
