Being a great strategist or ideas person is often treated like a natural talent. Some people simply notice more, make better connections and come up with sharper ideas.

But good thinking is rarely something you summon on demand. It is usually the result of the systems you set up around yourself.

You read widely and expose yourself to new inputs. A daily brief gives you something to react to. A customer comment changes how you see a problem. Something you disagree with forces you to clarify what you believe.

Then you capture the thoughts those inputs create.

They do not need to be clever, complete or coherent. Dictate them into your phone. Write a messy note. Save the half-formed idea before it disappears.

The quality of the note does not matter because it is not the finished product. ChatGPT can find the argument inside a rambling voice note, connect it to other ideas and help you develop it into something useful.

When you have a thought worth developing, use this prompt:

I’m going to give you a rough collection of thoughts, observations and ideas. They may be repetitive, incomplete or out of order.

First, identify the central idea I appear to be working toward.

Then:

1. Pull out the strongest observations and insights.
2. Identify any useful connections between them.
3. Separate what I know, what I am assuming and what still needs to be explored.
4. Highlight any original or particularly valuable ideas that I should not lose.
5. Organize my thinking into a clear outline.

Do not flatten my thinking into generic advice or replace my point of view with your own. Preserve what is distinctive about the original idea.

Once you have organized it, ask what I want to turn it into, such as a brief, post, plan, document or presentation.

Here are my rough thoughts:

The goal is not to get AI to think for you. It is to build a system that helps you notice, capture and develop more of your own thinking.

Happy prompting!
