ChatGPT is built to be helpful. Give it an idea and it will help you develop it. Change your mind halfway through the same chat and it will often help you develop the new idea instead.
That does not mean it has tested either line of thinking. It means it is responding to the direction you have given it.
Used that way, AI can make a weak assumption sound more considered. It can amplify your existing view, polish your logic, and fill the gaps with convincing language before you have worked out whether the premise is right.
The answer is not to stop using it as a thinking partner. It is to give it a different job.
Ask it to challenge the premise, identify the assumptions you may be treating as facts, offer competing explanations, and tell you what evidence would change the conclusion.
Try this prompt:
I want you to act as a rigorous thinking partner, not an agreeable assistant.
I am working through this idea:
[paste your thinking, decision, recommendation, or rough plan]
Help me examine it properly.
1. Challenge the premise
- What assumptions am I making?
- Which assumptions are unsupported, weak, or doing too much work?
- What might I be overlooking?
2. Present the strongest alternative view
- What would a smart person who disagrees say?
- What other explanations or approaches should I consider?
- Where could my logic be flawed, incomplete, or biased?
3. Help me decide what to do next
- What evidence would strengthen or weaken this thinking?
- What should I validate before I turn this into a decision or plan?
Be direct. Do not agree with me unless the reasoning holds up. Separate facts, assumptions, inferences, and recommendations clearly.
The point of AI is not to think less. It is to make better decisions with more to work from.
Happy prompting!
